COMMON DANCES: a multi-site scavenger hunt/performance event in over 30 sites throughout Red Hook, Brooklyn
Sep 19, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
After three years in development, the full suite of Shannon Hummel’s COMMON DANCES will premiere Saturdays, September 19 & 26 (rain dates Sundays, September 20 & 27). COMMON DANCES, a collection of 18 short works performed in over 30 locations and spaces throughout Red Hook, Brooklyn, is equal parts live performance, dance “scavenger hunt” and self-guided walking tour of the often overlooked spaces of this incredible community. Hummel’s love letter to the neighborhood, each dance is the ticket to a home or business that – though often small in scale – holds a mighty place in the heart of the community. Inspired by the ordinary-beautiful moments of loss, love, struggle, surprise, forgiveness and resolution we all share – COMMON DANCES takes place in intimate locations where Red Hook’s extraordinary people live and work – living room couches, park benches, dining room tables, church pews, bars, restaurant booths, factories, hallways and even inside of cars. These are not places on Brooklyn’s top ten must see lists. They are the workaday sites that are the foundation of every community, housing the private dreams, complex histories, lingering regrets and inspiring hopes that weave the fabric of our lives. Each 3-7 minute gem is an invitation to get to know the community on a broad, yet personal scale. From the massive public housing projects to the breathtaking waterfront, COMMON DANCES challenges audiences to explore and treasure the entire Red Hook community, through its people, their work, their homes and their stories – up close and personal.
