Celebrate Brooklyn: The Son of the Sheik with Live Score by Alloy Orchestra / Ghost Train Orchestra
Jul 17, 2015 @ 7:30 pm| Free
Perennial Celebrate Brooklyn! favorite ALLOY ORCHESTRA is simply “the best in the world at accompanying silent films.” (Roger Ebert) Armed with their signature “rack of junk” along with various zippy synthesizers and expressive noisemakers, they bring old films to life in singular fashion. And on a beautiful summer night in the park—that’s as good as it gets.
Their latest score tackles the 1926 adventure/drama classic THE SON OF THE SHEIK, Rudolf “Latin Lover” Valentino’s final performance on the silver screen. Valentino is in top form starring as both the wise old Sheik and his impulsive son Ahmed in this wild tale of passion, betrayal, and redemption. Arguably a better film than the 1922 original, this sequel was a box office smash, grossing over $1 million in its first year. When Valentino died suddenly on the eve of its release, the ensuing mass hysteria further solidified his status as the great hunk of the silent era.
BRIC presents the 37th annual Celebrate Brooklyn! Performing Arts Festival, comprised of 29 performances, June 3 – August 12. The programming, reflective of Brooklyn’s eclecticism and diversity, features a wide array of free, world-class performances in the singular environs of the Prospect Park Bandshell.
