Cats were deified by the ancient Egyptians then vilified by the medieval Church until the Renaissance and Baroque periods saw their gradual rehabilitation. By the eighteenth century, cats had become popular household pets worldwide. From Balthus’ “Cats and Girls” to Philippe Halsman’s “Dali Atomicus” to Internet sensations like Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub, cats are a mainstay of art and popular culture. For one night only, Morgan Avenue Underground celebrates the feline form.
