Building Your Birth Team: Focus on Doulas
Oct 22, 2014 @ 6:15 pm - 8:30 pm| $25
Did you know…
Substantial evidence demonstrates that doula support increases the likelihood of a safer, healthier, shorter and more satisfying birth experience.
Assembling your birth team is one of the more important decisions you make as you prepare for the birth of your baby. Simply having continuous labor support from a doula has been shown to shorten labors, decrease the use of pain medication, result in fewer obstetrical interventions, improve mother-infant bonding and lead to a more positive birth experience overall.
This workshop, led by Mary Esther Malloy, MA and hosted by Choices in Childbirth, will be dedicated to answering your questions: What is a birth doula? What does a doula do? How do I find a doula? What are the proven benefits of a doula? Does a doula replace my husband/partner? What will my OB/midwife/hospital think if have a doula? How much does a doula cost? How do I interview a doula to find one that is right for me? Does it make sense to have a doula if I am planning a medicated birth?
If you are thinking of inviting a doula to join your birth team or have already found a doula and would like to know more about doula care, we hope you will come hear inspiring birth stories from parents who have recently given birth in the hospitals, birth centers and homes of New York City with the help of doulas. Additionally, meet New York City doulas who will share labor support tips and answer your questions about doula care as you consider what is the best team for you.
This event will feature local snacks provided by Good Eggs, a NY-based delivery service whose mission is to grow and sustain local food systems worldwide. Tasting is from 5:15-6:15pm.
This evening coincides with the release of Choices in Childbirth’s “Doula Care in New York City: Advancing the Goals of Health Care Reform,” a report based on research carried out by Choices in Childbirth in 2013 and 2014 aimed at improving maternity care city-wide.
Please note that this is not a “meet-the-doula” night, but rather a workshop on doula care. The evening features stories from parents who’ve recently given birth with doula support and the voices of experienced doulas to help you better understand the range of options around doula care and consider whether this is the right choice for you.
