The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra will join with the Grace Chorale of Brooklyn for a spectacular April event: William Walton’s celebrated oratorio Belshazzar’s Feast, accompanied by the Ritual Dances from Michael Tippett’s opera “The Midsummer Marriage.” The Grace Chorale is directed by Jason Asbury; baritone Christopher Dylan Herbert appears with the BSO for a second time.

Walton’s masterly writing for the chorus, and his control of the extremely colorful orchestral palette make this work, telling the story of the “writing on the wall” that led to the death of King Belshazzar, enormously fun to experience. Sir Michael Tippett’s rarely-performed opera “The Midsummer Marriage” is a modern-day cousin of Mozart’s “Magic Flute” and the Ritual Dances evoke the passing of the seasons and the rituals of rural life.

To accommodate the enormous combined ensemble, which will include 2 brass bands in addition to the full orchestra and choir, the concert will be performed in the Beaux-Arts Court on the 3rd floor of the Brooklyn Museum.
