Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra concert: Prokofiev 5, Rosenkavalier Suite
May 31, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm| 20; $18 online; seniors and museum members $10; children 16 and under free.
For its final concert of the season, the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra will present Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No 5 in B-flat, Op.100. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the symphony’s premiere in the last days of World War II. Prokofiev’s 5th symphony is among the most important responses to the war made by Soviet composers, and stands next to the works of Shostakovitch in the genre. Prokofiev’s score is rich in melody and tinged with profound moments of pathos. Also on the program is the Suite from “Der Rosenkavalier”, Richard Strauss’s famous comic opera set in Vienna’s golden age. The connected movements of the suite capture the opera’s great moments of passionate romantic music, and the sparkling waltzes are reminiscent of Richard Strauss’s Viennese namesake (although no relative), Johann Strauss.
