Its cold outside, but we are bringing the tropics to BRIC House with films to be announced. We plan to bring in some Caribbean music as well. Conceptualized in 1999, caribBEING is a multidisciplinary nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing Caribbean film + art + culture in Greater New York City and around the world. Part of caribBEING’s mission is to illuminate the Caribbean experience as well as its significant impact in NYC and Diaspora communities. Made in Brooklyn. 100% Caribbean.

This month’s BRIC FLIX will showcase the film, music and writings of people of Caribbean descent and bring them all together with a discussion on what it means to be a CARIBPOLITAN.

Short film Screenings:

  • Making History (Karen D. McKinnon & Caecilia Tripp, 2008): Édouard Glissant is widely acknowledged as one of the most important Caribbean writers of the past half-century. In 2002, Linton Kwesi Johnson became the only second living poet and first black poet to have his work published in Penguin`s Modern Classic series. Watch as these two friends meet on a summer day.
  • Missing Melodie (Monique Cambell, 2008). A young woman emigrates from Jamaica in hopes of reuniting with her mother.

Q&A discussion with Oneka LaBennett author of  “She’s Mad Real: Popular Culture and West Indian Girls in Brooklyn”

  • Performance by: Irka Mateo: a Dominican singer songwriter and world music artist. Her artistic career has been one of breaking boundaries and embracing people’s deepest humanity especially through their music.
