Black History and Good Music: UsagiNY Screens Wattstax (1973) [Rated R]

Feb 25, 2016 @ 6:00 pm

Celebrate the last throwback Thursday of the Black History Month with a free showing of Wattstax (1973), Mel Stuart’s politically charged concert film featuring performances by such soul and R&B greats as Isaac Hayes, Albert King, The Staples Singers, and The Emotions. Despite being nominated for the Golden Globe and receiving critical acclaim, the documentary was deemed too racy and was not widely screened in the theaters. It has been a cult favorite for years, but deserves to be more widely seen as a beautiful example of a peaceful expression and nonviolent protest against persistent injustice faced by Black Americans.

Wattstax contains strong language and images of violence. The film is Rated R.

Special anniversary edition of Wattstax will be projected onto multiple screens throughout the gallery. After-party with curated soul, jazz, blues, and funk playlist to follow.
