Beyond Backdrop: Fiction in the Wake of History
Dec 8, 2013 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm| Free
This panel discussion will explore narratives set in motion by a maelstrom event like Hurricane Sandy. The panel features fiction writers who have used notable historical moments as the impetus for their works.
How does fiction set in history allow a writer to explore her characters (and that historical reality) in a way she otherwise couldn’t? How do you draw from history without being beholden to reality? In other words, where is the line between fact and fiction?
Joseph O’Neill: Author of Netherland and winner of the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.
Lucy Alibar: Author, playwright, and screenwriter of the acclaimed film “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
Alex Gilvarry: Author of From the Memoirs of a Non-Enemy Combatant, and the founding editor of the Tottenville Review.
