Bedford Stuyvesant has received a great deal of attention in the last few years, and is undergoing many changes. This Olio will help you understand why.

Come learn about Bed-Stuy and its rich and storied history, from the Lenape peoples, through the Dutch, the English and beyond. Anchoring that history is some of the city’s finest residential row house architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I will talk a lot about the newly landmarked Bedford Historic District and the older Stuyvesant Heights Districts.

I also plan to focusing on Stuyvesant Avenue and Hancock Street and the surrounding blocks comprising the heart of Bedford and Stuyvesant Heights. This talk will include stories about the works from some of Brooklyn’s finest architects; their rowhouses, apartment buildings, mansions, schools and churches. You’ll also learn about the history and culture of the largest African-American community in New York City, a history that is hundreds of years in the making.
