A master of funk on the level of James Brown and Sly Stone, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic lent the genre a psychedelic swagger in the 70s and 80s with tracks like “Atomic Dog.” Extensively sampled by hip-hop artists—most famously in Snoop D

BAM kicks off the summer with its free lunchtime concert series at MetroTech Commons, on the corner of Flatbush and Myrtle Avenues in Downtown Brooklyn. Produced by Danny Kapilian the BAM R&B Festival at MetroTech has brought some of the world’s greatest talents in funk, soul, R&B, and world music to Brooklyn. This year’s special anniversary line-up will be bookended by performances from two of the principal vocalists featured in this year’s Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom—Darlene Love (Jun 5) and Lisa Fischer (Aug 7).

Other highlights of the festival include The Ohio Players bringing the funk, Henry Butler as the star of the incredible new band Butler Bernstein & the Hot 9, and Third World with their love of reggae and Jamaican culture. Rounding out a memorable summer will be New Orleans’ Nicholas Payton and New York’s Snarky Puppy with their own takes on jazz and R&B, Chicago legend Bobby Rush bringing his old-time bluesy soul, and newbies Fredericks Brown and Davell Crawford who will make their BAM R&B premieres.
