ASYLUM tells the story of five people deemed unfit for society and living on the periphery of what we call “sanity” in an asylum just on the eve of the mass wave of psychiatric hospital closings in America between the 1970s-90s Created in collaboration with the cast and designers, this show is a mix of devised theatre and aerial/circus choreography. Our source material includes: Nellie Bly’s 10 Days in a Madhouse, Emily Dickenson’s poetry, Michael Foucault’s Madness and Civilization, Bradley Lewis’ essays, Christopher Payne’s Asylum, Darby Penney and Peter Stastny’s The Lives They Left Behind, and writings by the Icarus Project to name a few. We’ve translated the knowledge we’ve gained through our research into an artistic conversation between projected photographs, aerial movement, original music and voiceover to tell the story of four patients and an over-extended nurse making their way through a crumbling system.
