Jan 28, 2016 @ 8:00 pm
Encompass New Opera Theatre announces the New York premiere (and first fully-staged production) of The Astronaut’s Tale, a multi-media chamber opera by composer Charles Fussell based on an original libretto by Jack Larson.
Performances take place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Fishman Space) at BAM Fisher, 321 Ashland Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217:
With multi-media projections of the cosmos enhancing the percussive score, The Astronaut’s Tale tells the story of a young man (Abel/Ab) who dreams of becoming an astronaut and exploring the galaxy. Guided by a mysterious stranger who challenges his views on creation and fuels his desire to travel into space, he discovers romance and a drive to succeed which catapults his blast off into space, transforming his life.
The cast features tenor Eapen Leubner (Abel); soprano Lianne Gennaco (Ann); bass Frank Basile (Peccavit, the Peddler); with narration by Christopher Vettel.
The opera is directed by Nancy Rhodes, with a chamber ensemble conducted by Nicholas DeMaison. The production features sets by Stephen H. Carmody, projections by Lianne Arnold, costumes by Angela Huff with lighting design by Sarah Johnston.
Free panel discussions will take place after each performance with the artists and astronomers from Columbia University’s Astronomy Public Outreach Program.
