Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

March 11 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

| Free

Join us at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Education and Research Building at The Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend.

This year’s edit-a-thon kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with a conversation about information activism with writer Joanne McNeil and Data & Society Research Institute Fellow Zara Rahman, moderated by Kimberly Drew, the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, creator of the Tumblr “Black Contemporary Art,” and the person behind @museummammy on Instagram. Afternoon breakout groups will engage in focused discussions about related issues, including intersectionality and librarianship, power structures in notability guidelines on Wikipedia, and radical archives. Additionally, this year Art+Feminism is partnering with AfroCROWD, which seeks to increase the number of people of the African diaspora who actively partake in the Wikimedia. AfroCROWD will have a table at MoMA and list of article to create and improve.

Throughout the day, we will provide trainings for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, childcare, and refreshments. Trainings are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we welcome you to stop by to show your support and join us for the kick-off panel discussion.

For childcare, please contact us at info@artandfeminism.org by March 7th, 2017, and let us know the first names and number of children requiring care, their ages, and what time you plan on attending.

The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is organized by Art+Feminism, led by Siân Evans/Art Libraries Society of North America’s Women and Art Special Interest Group, Jacqueline Mabey/failed projects, McKensie Mack and Michael Mandiberg, in collaboration with AfroCROWD, the Professional Organization for Women in the Arts (POWarts) and The Museum of Modern Art and with support from Wikimedia DC, Wikimedia NYC, and the Wikimedia Foundation. Major support for this program is provided by The Modern Women’s Fund.
