How do we make sense of the world around us? Humans take in vast amounts of sensory data and our minds need to process, apply meaning and construct a coherent reality. In
Applied Linguistics, Schema Theory is a widely accepted explanation for how we process.
In this accessible and interactive talk, we will explore Schema Theory and the role it plays in interpreting the world around us. By deepening our awareness of the role this cognitive
theory plays in art appreciation, we can gain a new perspective on visual art, insights as to why a piece is successful or not successful, and ultimately why art truly is important for
Peter McGill is an experienced language teacher and ESL teacher trainer with an MA in
Applied Linguistics. He currently trains new teachers on Communicative Language Teaching methodology and linguistic theory in Manhattan. He is also a visual artist with a BFA in
painting, who lives and works in Brooklyn.
