Art-Lab: Pareena Lim

Mar 1, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

| $5

Each event will be somewhere between a performance, lecture/discussion, or experiment – designed by one artist. The goal is to create an environment in which the artist can pose (and hopefully answer) some question they have about their own practice, utilizing the willing audience. It is an opportunity to take risks we might not take in a performance setting, or have a more candid relationship to the audience, or generate new ideas, ways of thinking, drive home a point, inspire etc.

This Month: Pareena Lim’s “What am I doing?”

“What am I doing?” is the operative question for this event. We will consider many viable answers, all of which structure how we make art, live our life, and of course, the artwork itself. I am really interested in the intersection of all these phenomena. I want to champion non-answers, quasi-answers, and poly-answering, which fortunately, the medium in which I work, choreography, does quite well.

I am passionate about dance and choreography. I love its history and traditions. I came to New York ten years ago to be among those who feel similarly–working to push the form further. I have ended up spending many hours outside my direct art practice working as a barista, waitress, babysitter, office assistant, retail associate, art model, and yoga teacher. As I do these jobs, grateful for the income it provides, I often ask, “what am I doing?” I made feedthedance.com as a platform to consider the relevancy of dance in today’s economy, and to muse about ways we can get paid doing what we love, in order to keep doing what we do, better.

So as I am designing this event, I am also wondering what’ll it will entail. I am imagining it as an interactive, performative rehearsal round table. I assume many participants will also be artists, and I would love to hear your stories and ideas for alternative systems to sustain ourselves. You’ll also be watching me performing dances I’ve made and responding within an organized structure. Your responses will be used to shape the emerging work and to inform my practice at large.
