Group art show opening featuring *Christybomb,* MAVA, + Sally Ko

Lazy Susan Gallery, Lower East Side Manhattan, NYC
October 26 to November 1, 2016

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 27, 2016, 6-9pm

Lazy Susan Gallery is pleased to present “Acid Free” – a group exhibition of new works by Christybomb, MAVA, and Sally Ko, curated by Jill Conner. The show’s title references elusive and, at times, exclusionary boundaries that exist between the realms of art and craft.

Shown for the first time, these pieces incorporate craft materials with tactile imagery and portray both intimate and distancing relationships. Surfaces alternate from being highly tactile paint to highly crafted materials. Each artwork reinterprets the use of both traditional and craft materials by assigning them new roles and visual identities.

The layering and multiplicity of textures draws the viewer in for up-close encounters, making the objects more present rather than self-aware. The art objects also move beyond their own traditional context, breaking free into three-dimensional and sculptural pieces.

Christybomb works by sourcing atypical materials and then layering the combination of craft objects, acrylic paint, and other materials stressing the relationships between shape and color. For this exhibition, she explores a monochromatic palette of white on white, black and grays along with concentric shapes comprised of pipe cleaners and yarn.

MAVA works by gathering materials based on specific shapes, colors, textures, and applies a process similar to couture fashion involving an application of sewing, adjustments, remaking, and embellishments. His Untitled piece shows a portrait of a woman on organza whose veil takes on real dimensions, flowing transparently over her painted face.

The surface of Sally Ko’s paintings takes on the look of an array of peacock feathers made of Murano glass or geological rocks with dashes of color. She uses paint to create textural and sculptural forms on two-dimensional surfaces.
