3rd Annual Park Slope Messiah Sing Along
Dec 11, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm| 20/25
In one of the most inspiring instances of peace on earth and goodwill toward men to be found in Brooklyn this holiday season, Congregation Beth Elohim has once again offered their synagogue to their sister congregation, Old First Reformed Church, for the Third Annual Park Slope Messiah Sing Along on December 11. The sing along is open to everyone, no matter race, creed, orientation, or relative singing ability. Join in and sing out loud, or just sit back and meditate on this communal exultation of Handel’s stirring oratorio.
CBE’s Rabbi Bachman writes “Congregation Beth Elohim is proud to host the Messiah Sing Along. Our faith communities have been friends for many years, supporting one another in times of challenge and triumph. And the idea of the Messiah is a central religious tenet of ancient Judaism as well as Christianity. While we differ on certain theological grounds in this regard, we nevertheless share an abiding hope for better days and a better world. Regardless of where one resides on the faith spectrum, the sheer human power of its artistry is something anyone can enjoy. “
Soloists include Donna Breitzer (mezzo soprano), Jeff Mandelbaum (countertenor), Cantor Josh Breitzer (tenor), and Benjamin Bloomfield (baritone), with Old First’s Aleeza Meir on continuo and Maestra Dorothy Savitch conducting the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra.
Proceeds benefit Old First’s Restoration Campaign, which has raised almost $400,000 toward the repair of its landmark building and historic sanctuary, a great and precious sacred space for Brooklyn which now needs our help.
Musical scores for the oratorio are available from our friends at the Community Bookstore at 143 7th Avenue or may be rented or purchased at the event.
