And, naturally, Brooklyn’s not being left out in the cold this year; our fair borough’s getting a good dose of the shows. Here are some highlights, organized by ‘hood. BED-STUY: Blues singer-songwriter Kira Lyra will be performing some soul and jazz hits from 4pm to 5pm at 1114 Fulton Street. At 7pm, hip-hop and R&B group H.O.M.E. TEAM will be laying down beats at 376 Tompkins Ave. BROOKLYN HEIGHTS: For fans of acoustic country and bluegrass, Chicken Barn Heroes will perform at 155 Montague Street from noon to 1pm. Well, maybe if we schedule two series in the same exact location and same exact time, like some kind of wacky sitcom, then yes, you can. But otherwise, no. And while it was looking for a second there like East River Park would have no free movies to speak of this summer, The Brooklyn Paper says that Neighbors Allied for Good Growth has done the neighborly thing and stepped in with some summer movies. The movies will be shown on Mondays, at 8:30pm at the Williamsburg park, starting on June 24. This movie series skews a little more family-friendly than the others, with no R-rated movies making an appearance. But if you want your fill of cursing and guardian-required cinema in Williamsburg, you can always hit up SummerScreen. But now with the news that the NSA is basically reading your thoughts, and without a warrant no less, we have an honest-to-god scandal that makes the government look like the Eye of Sauron.
A few months ago, we alerted you to the fact that the dolphin-killing waters of the Gowanus Canal would soon play host to something other than suspected coal tar wastes, sewer discharge and gonorrhea; the Gowanus Challenge, a canoe race, would be held on the Canal’s poop-ey waters on June 15. And that day is almost here, so if you’ve been angling to dip your oar in some sludge, registration is now open. The race is being held by the Gowanus Dredgers, a group of local residents and businesses pushing to help clean up the Gowanus waterfront. The Dredgers are asking participants to raise $500 in pledges if they want to borrow a canoe ($250 for a kayak), but if you bring your own, you’re free to ride sans pledge — though it would be nice if you can raise some cash for the cause, too.
