Then it dies and you and your friend spend the next 40 minutes trying to find each other. There’s got to be a better way! AT&T is trying to make sure there is now, with a series of free solar-powered phone charging stations in few New York parks, including four Brooklyn parks, according to the Observer. The best part about these phone chargers? Well, aside from the fact that they’ll be free to use. It’s that they don’t just work on iPhones, they work on spacephones of all stripes. So now you don’t need to be completely neurotic about having your cellphone charged to full before leaving the apartment, like some of us who own [BRAND REDACTED] phones. Jacob Riis and Rockaway Beach will be open for business, and the Rockabus is already shuttling people back and forth from Williamsburg, Grand Army Plaza and the Lower East Side. But it looks like the hipster highway shuttle’s gonna have more competition than the A train this summer, because there’s another Rockaway bus in town, and it’s cheaper. Dubbed NYC Beach Bus, this baby runs from Park Slope (what they call the Downtown stop) and Williamsburg to Jacob Riis on Saturdays, Sundays and all holidays starting July 4 and ending Labor Day. But, he loves to party, we love to party, our interests pretty much fall in line. And his newest stunt, sitting outside in Times Square and drumming for a full 24 hours starting tomorrow, is something we can definitely get behind. As part of the O Music Awards, which celebrate digital music apparently, Andrew WK is going to post up at the Oakley store (Broadway and 44th Street) at 7pm tomorrow in the heart of New York City, Times Square, and play the drums for 24 consecutive hours. Ostensibly he’ll be doing it so to promote his candidacy for “Must Follow Artist on Twitter,” but as with most things Andrew WK-related, who the hell really knows why he’s doing it, short of the fact that it sounds like a party.… Read More

How about a study by Transportation Alternatives that found that Brooklyn had the most deaths by cars, 79, in New York City in all of 2011?
Despite the fact that the Earth doesn’t seem to give a damn, the city’s position towards recycling has been expansionist towards recycling under Mike Bloomberg. We mean, it couldn’t hurt. Fresh off of expanding plastic recycling to cover any kind of plastic, the city is jumping into the composting game. And while it probably won’t rise to the level of squicking people out the way using human waste for fertilizer in Prospect Park would, the will probably cause wrinkled noses. But hey, it’ll save money! The Times reports that the city’s composting program, aimed ultimately at using food scraps for biogas, is going to be rolling out a voluntary compost program in residential neighborhoods in the coming year, before eventually expanding the program to the entire city by 2015 or 2016. Aside from being environmentally friendly, advocates for the plan say that it will save New York $100 million per year… Read More

Last week, the words got rotated out for the first time, thanks to this contest. Originally, they said “micro lip” and “pink crown;” now they spell out “mo vinyl” and “wry romp.” It’s just the first of planned word changes into the future. Portland has had a year to commission some Brian Eno racks but still none are in sight, so I think we’re winning, Brooklyn. That top one is to the right if you’re facing BAM.
