Steve Bonano Last time we were publicizing a blood drive, it was in relation to the attacks in Boston, but you’ve got a chance to do some good in your own backyard now. 9/11 first responder, Navy vet, 30-year NYPD officer and head of Barclays Center security Steve Bonano is battling blood cancer, possibly related to his work at Ground Zero, and needs a bone marrow transfusion. So today and tomorrow, you can sign up to be a bone marrow donor at 345 Jay Street, right outside the Jay-Street MetroTech subway stop. Bonano was a first responder and worked at Ground Zero for three weeks, years and years before the health risks associated with working on the pile were made clear. Nice place to watch a movie We know what you’re thinking (we can read minds): “Enough with the free summer events already. We want to go out and spend money!” Well, sorry, because a whole new program of free summer events has landed, this time in Downtown Brooklyn’s Summer@MetroTech, and just like every other free summer programming, it looks great. The open space in Downtown Brooklyn will be the host to music in the form of  BAM R&B Festival that runs on every Thursday from June 6 to August 8 and three free movies from Rooftop Films. What treasures await educated bargain hunters? via Flickr user emily geoff I LOVE to shop, but this habit of mine comes with some unfortunate side effects. In the past, I’ve hit up an outlet spot like DSW, thinking I’m getting a deal on some pair of Aldo boots or something that still comes out to like, 100 freaking dollars, and then 6 months later the zipper breaks and the heel pops off. Or there’s the time I spent $60 on some dress at Topshop, since that’s apparently the going rate nowadays for something that cost $2 to make, only to have the seam inexplicably unravel and leave me half-naked in line at some Duane Reade NOT within walking distance from my house. Metroid actually does bring up issues of gender identity and assumption Remember when you were a kid and had already given up on your dream of sports stardom because you were uncoordinated and kinda goofy? It’s fine, we gave up pretty early too. Then you figured you’d do the next most fun-looking thing out there, which was design video games. Except that didn’t pan out either because colleges didn’t really take games too seriously. Sorry about that. Especially since now the next generation of damn kids actually will get the opportunity to major in video games, and at NYU of all places. And they’ll get to do all their learning in Brooklyn. Though rent in Brooklyn’s getting more and more expensive (and we’re still waiting on Mayor Bloomberg to come through with those promised tiny apartments), there’s still hope for the broke; Brownstoner says a new apartment complex under construction in Downtown Brooklyn will be offering 63 one-and-two bedroom units for households that make $20,640 to $42,950 a year, and they’re currently accepting applications! The development, which is located at 66 Rockwell Place (formerly 29 Flatbush Ave, but doesn’t Rockwell Place sound fancier?), will be offering studios at $546/month and $696/month and one-bedrooms at $587 and $748/month, along with two-beds for $714/month and $907/month. The Alamo Drafthouse knows that we’re totally subject to its merciless will, languishing in the streets of Brooklyn waiting for their New York installments to arrive. To give us a glimpse of what’s in store, yesterday they released their menu online, still with little to no word as to when they’re actually opening. We first mentioned the Drafthouse’s ambitious eastward expansion back in December. The Texas enterprise is planning on building three New York locations, the first of which is scheduled to open soon, as in some point this summer…in Yonkers. Williamsburg has been hogging Brooklyn’s share of serious movie houses going up lately with its additions of Nitehawk and indieScreen, but the grandaddy of boozin’ at the movies, Alamo Drafthouse, is set to make cinephiles outside Williamsburg happy, with their planned opening at the Fulton Mall. The Austin-based movie house isn’t set to open until 2015, which should be just in time for the next regrettable, alcohol-necessitating Star Wars movie to come out. The Drafthouse is going to be part of the City Point development, last mentioned here because people were angry at Armani. The theatre will have seven screens and show current features, repertory programming and incorporate Alamo’s flair for themed days, like Terror Tuesdays and events like HeckleVision, in which your texted joke about a movie appears onscreen. Also?
