130? Naw, you don’t look a day over 115! via Wikimedia Everyone loves birthdays, right? Don’t tell us if you hate them, it’ll ruin this. Anyway, everyone loves birthdays, and you know what lives in New York and has had a ton of them? The Brooklyn Bridge! Specifically, it’s had 129 birthdays, which makes it one of the oldest suspension bridges in the US. And Sunday, the Bridge turns the big (one) three-oh, which calls for a poetry reading to celebrate it. Head down to Pier 1 at the Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday, and you can witness a marathon reading of The Bridge, a truly epic poem. Mystery! via Facebook An often overrated part about going to the movies that you know what you’re going to see. We don’t mean in the “formulaic Hollywood garbage” sense, we mean that the sign on the movie theater informs you of what you’re watching. The Independent Filmmaker Project, Filmmaker Magazine and reRun agree with that sentiment, which is why they’ve teamed up for the “Secret Film Club,” a new series of independent movie screenings where you don’t know in advance what they are. Of course, you don’t have to go in worried that you’re going to be exposed to some cinematic version of Goatse. Or, well, maybe you do? It is independent film after all. BrooklynVegan has some scenes from the dedication, and the city parks page for the playground has a Beasite Boys lyric on it, because of course it does. Welcome to summer Sure, you’ve still got your space heater plugged in and haven’t retired that ratty winter coat yet, but really, summer is coming, we swear! (Maybe. Hopefully. PLEASE GOD PLEASE). And even if the weather’s being coy, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s getting ready for outdoor movie season: they’ve released the schedule for Syfy’s free Movies With a View series, and it looks awesome. Like, Ferris Bueller-awesome. Because one of the films is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Seriously, if you’re not psyched, you’re not human. The Modern Lover may love the old world, but time marches on regardless, things break down and become inconvenient, and the question has to be asked: is it worth keeping this old thing? DUMBO is facing that exact question right now, now that the city has informed residents there that it wants to rip up and replace the old cobblestones that make up some of neighborhood’s streets. Kim Velsey at the Observer did a good job going over the arguments both in favor and against changing the streets, pointing out the city’s “compliance with American with Disabilities Act” excuse comes 13 years after the ADA was passed and that replacing the old stones with faux-old cobblestones is expensive and hated by preservationists. So here’s some good news: the Squibb Bridge and Park, one of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s newest attractions, is open for walking and frolicking! The Squibb Bridge is really cool because first of all, it lets you cross Furman Street and get to the park without the fear of getting run over by a car.
