Brooklyn’s Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from glam rock to being Miley Cyrus

Go wreck it, for America
Go wreck it, for America

Congratulations to everyone reading this, you made it to the end of the week. We know what you’re thinking, about how it’s Thursday and not Friday, but given time’s fluid nature and more importantly the fact that the working week will more or less stop tomorrow in order to let people get a head start on screaming “Wooo America!”, we’re calling it today. Before you either go out of town or step away from your computers for a long weekend, you should let the Brokelyn Event Calendar point you to some cool things to do tonight.

GLAMORUS: A GLAM ROCK PARTY
There are some people out there who’ll tell you that rock stars these days lack panache and style. Other more reasonable people will tell you that styles change, and people weren’t going to wear spangles and space makeup forever. More importantly, even if the fashion of the day has moved on, everyone can still appreciate the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls and Gary Glitter. Or uh, maybe not so much Gary Glitter. Still! Put on something bright and slather on some glitter, then sweat it off (maybe onto someone else) while dancing at the Passenger Bar, since the Teenage Guide to Popularity was nice enough to put this whole glam rock party together for you.
11:50pm, The Passenger Bar, 229 Roebling Street, Williamsburg, FREE

HASTILY WRITTEN MASTERPIECE: A MILEY CYRUS JUKEBOX MUSICAL
Hey, you know who has a pretty good thing going right now is Miley Cyrus, what with taking control of the wild pop star narrative people pinned on her and making out with Victoria’s Secret models. So head on down to the Cobra Club and you can get a chance to be Miley Cyrus, as Brooklyn’s #1 weirdo Jo Firestone puts together another impromptu musical, this time a salute to America based on the songs of the former Hannah Montana. Maybe if this goes well enough, it can be you making a career out of getting high and smooching models.
8:30pm, The Cobra Club, 6 Wyckoff Avenue, Bushwick, $8

LIVE AT THE ARCHWAY: DJ TIM LEE OF TUMMY TOUCH RECORDS
It’s summer, so there’s no need for you to do all of your dancing indoors. Well, there’s probably gonna be a point where it’s so hot that you get angry at the suggestion of dancing outdoors, so take advantage of a free dance party at the DUMBO Archway while we’re still going through some pretty mild weather. An acid house dance party in August when it’s still 90 degrees when the sun goes down just doesn’t have the same ring to it that one when it’s 75 degrees does.
5pm, Manhattan Bridge Archway, Water Street between Anchorage Place and Adams Street, DUMBO, FREE

THE DIAMOND’S 8TH ANNIVERSARY
Canada just celebrated their birthday. America celebrates its birthday on Saturday. In between all that, we have another birthday for you, as Greenpoint’s The Diamond turns eight years old, and is celebrating with half price drafts from 5pm to 8pm and a special draft list of their favorite beers from the past eight years. Man oh man, a bar lasting eight years in this insane cutthroat, very saturated Brooklyn alcohol market is really impressive. Then again, The Diamond is also a great bar that knows their beer, has a gondola in the backyard and free shuffleboard, so it’s not like we’re shocked they made it this long.
5pm, The Diamond, 43 Franklin Street, Greenpoint, FREE

MOVIES IN THE PARK: PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE
You think you love your bike? See the lengths that Pee-Wee Herman goes to in order to get his bike back and then tell us about how much you love your bike. Best of all, you’ll be watching under the stars (well in theory there are stars behind the light pollution), so don’t forget to be ready to clap when Pee-Wee calls out “The stars at night, are big and bright…”

8:30pm, Red Hook Ball Field #1, Bay Street between Clinton Street and Court Street, FREE
