This Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY, get your epic exercise on with the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative‘s 6th annual Epic Ride, a great alternative for anybody who missed out on registering for the always popular Five Boro Bike Tour, or those who laughed maniacally at the $90 price tag to participate, which sounds like a weird thing to do but okay. Starting bright and early at 8am, the 40-mile bike ride will take you from Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach, providing a great chance to see a whole lot of Brooklyn (and a tiny bit of Queens) within a few hours.

The epic route traces that of the theoretical Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway which, when completed, will connect the 14-mile waterfront running from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge, allowing cyclists a less terrifying way to get from north to south Brooklyn on their trusty steeds. The $40 registration fee will help benefit efforts to complete the project.

If it’s been awhile since you’ve ridden long distance or, since the ride is on Sunday morning you’re pretty sure you’ll be too hungover and sleep-deprived to go the whole 40 miles, prepare for some good news: Two alternate starting points at Owl’s Head Park and Floyd Bennett Field will provide 26- and leisurely 14-mile rides, respectively. There’ll also be an after-party at the beach, featuring live music and food vendors, ready to help you hastily cancel out any of the health benefits you just enjoyed from the bike ride.

Go ahead, finally launder those bike shorts, download the Top Gun soundtrack and grab your ticket; it’s time to ride. Epically.
