BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from debating about aliens to pondering war

tk
Stare at this picture of Alf long enough and you realize he’s kind of horrifying

I’ve got a friend who claims he was so excited about today being Wednesday, last night he said “Nice, tomorrow’s Wednesday” out loud, to no one. I can’t say I’m that excited that it’s Wednesday, but it’s better than some of the other days of the week. It also has so many good things going on that recommending just five from the Brokelyn Event Calendar was kind of mentally painful. I mean, not that painful, let’s not be silly here. It was just tough to pick only five things today.

OH MY SCIENCE PRESENTS; WHAT ABOUT ALIENS?
The odds are pretty likely that at some point in your life, you’ve looked up at the stars and wondered if there was life out there. Or maybe you didn’t because you’re solipsistic. Either way, documentary/comedy show Oh My Science wants to confront the question of life out in the universe (and maybe multiverse) with your help.
7pm, Videology, 308 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, FREE

STAND UP FOR CHARLESTON
So we already told you about how we think this is going to be a good show, but in case you don’t want to click over to that other post, we’ll give you a brief summary: Aparna Nancherla! Guy Branum! Hosted by Broad City writer Naomi Ekperigin! Comedy with all ticket sales going towards Charleston’s Mother Emmanuel AME Church and racial/economic justice group Project South!
7pm, The Bell House, 149 7th Street, Gowanus, $25

BOGART AND BACALL MOVIE NIGHT: THE BIG SLEEP
Bogie! Bacall! Raymond Chandler! Okay we’ll stop with the exclamation point bit, but seriously, it’s a sweltering night and that’s just perfect for a classic American noir film. Beyond being a classic of its form starring Hollywood royalty, the movie is also one of the primary influences of The Big Lebowski, which we hear you kids really like.
7:30pm, Target Community Garden, 931 Bedford Avenue, Bed-Stuy, FREE

HOW I LEARNED YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO HOME BUT YOU CAN’T STAY HERE
Has this ever happened to you: you’re the last person at the bar or the party. Or you’re getting kicked out of the bar or party. Or you and your friends decide “Hey we should leave this bar or party.” It probably has, it’s a pretty common human experience, so listen to funny people like Max Silvestri, Ophira Eisenberg and Lynn Bixenspan tell stories related to situations like that.
8pm, Union Hall, 702 Union Street, Park Slope, $6

THINK AND DRINK PRESENTS HUMAN NATURE AND WAR
War is a popular subject to talk about in America because war is a popular activity in America. And around the world, to be fair. What drives us to kill each other in such an organized fashion? Rutgers anthropology professor R. Brian Ferguson has some ideas about why we do that, so he’ll talk about what he’s learned about human nature and war in the Roberta’s garden tonight. A possibly depressing subject, yes, but at least you’ll be out in a nice backyard while you listen to it.
7pm, Roberta’s, 261 Moore Street, Bushwick, FREE
