Sales & Deals

Twitterers every brokester should follow

Everyone knows of all the different group deals sites out there — odds are, you’ve got Groupon, LivingSocial and maybe even JDeal offers flooding your inbox every morning. But those deals don’t have exclusive providence on saving you money: there’s still Twitter! Yes, the land of various fictional Hulks and annoying rich celebrities is packed with accounts whose sole purpose is saving you money, getting you into free events (like advance movie screenings or The Colbert Report) and getting you free beer every day of the week. Follow these accounts to make sure you don’t miss a single open bar, sample sale or last-minute airfare deal.

FOOD/DRINK
@PBR_Brooklyn
Keeps track of the local PBR street team and all the discounts and open-bar events they carry in their wake (like last week’s Stick & Poke tattoo event).

@ScoutmobNYC
Broadcasts the site’s deal of the day (usually food or bar related) but also passes on other interesting events, contests and deals. The best part about Scoutmob? You don’t have to buy anything up front, you just use the deal once you get to the restaurant, which means no wasted money on unclaimed deals.

@MyOpenBar
MyOpenBar often seems to be populated largely by hour free vodka deals at cruddy Manhattan clubs where you still have to pay a $5 cover, but occasionally there’s a good open bar. Example: recent free Reyka vodka open bar in Bushwick.

TRAVEL
@JetBlueCheeps
Find deals on last-minute flights discounts and airline promotions. Recent tweet deals: JFK to Austin for $109, with about a week and a half notice.

@airfarewatchdog
Tracks not only last-minute deals from various airlines, but also regular airline promotions and travel tips (example: Why checking bling is a bad idea). Recent deals: Roundtrip from NYC to LA for $266.

JOBS
@NYCJobfeed A slightly haphazard but constantly updated listing of jobs available in New York City. Recent listings: “Russian and European Female Models Wanted,” “Fashion Designer Looking for Intern: Samantha Jovani Location” and “Music school looking for group instructor for ages 2-4.”

@NYFocusGroups With the slogan “Finally get paid to be opinionated,” this account lists opportunities to get paid for taking part in opinion surveys, studies and the like. Recent offer: $85 for males 18-30.

MUSIC
@Amazonmp3
Daily deals on downloadable music from Amazon, with albums as low as $2.99 and tracks for 69 cents. You know, if you’re still into that paying for music thing.

@MyFreeConcertNY
An extensive list of free shows across the whole city every day, from big outdoor concerts to small bar shows. Recent post: Lenny Kravitz is playing a free show at Terminal 5 tomorrow, in case you wanted to double down on the terrible things in your life.

MOVIES & EVENTS
@NYScreenings
Gives you the scoop on free advance moving screenings in New York City and tells you how to get tickets (whether through a Village Voice promotion, contest or printable voucher). Recent listings include Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Fright Night, Conan the Barbarian and 30 Minutes or Less.

@DailyTix
Pretty much the only way to actually get those much-sought-after free tickets for The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. The feed announces whenever each show releases a new batch of tickets (usually months in advance of the show date), tells you how many are left and then updates when each one is sold out. I’ve even gotten tickets for a show the morning of!

@theSkint
Our BBFF (Budget Blog Friends Forever), the skint sends out daily listings of the best free and cheap things to do, plus rounds up the best group deals of the day.

DISCOUNTS
@DealsPlus
A strange but often useful mix of discounts and coupons from all over the web. Recent listings include a skier-towed rowboat, $100 off Hotels.com booking and Staples back-to-school deals.

@NYDealoftheDay
Tracks the Daily News’ daily group deal, but also forwards on other deals and affordable events. Recent listings include upcoming giveaways at Luna Park, free outdoor Gotham Girls roller derby and a deal on cheesesteaks from Carls Steaks.

@NYCCheap
Lists contests, online-only deals, sales, free downloadable music, in-store events and more. Recent tweets include a gluten-free baking class at Williams Sonoma,

@FantabFrugalNYC
For the fashion-forward but revenue neutral twitterer, this account tracks a ton of sample sales around the city, including Jessica Simpson dresses at Beyond the Rack.

@CouponTweet
Though the feed has been barren for a minute, it’s starting up again to track coupons in the old-school sense, like 50 cents off Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and promo codes for 10 percent off Urban Outfitters.

And finally, @Brokelyn
Duh.
