Giving your old computer a second life

by | 7.17.09 | 1 Comment

picture-248If you’ve got some high-tech trash hanging around, this weekend is your chance to unload it while putting it to good use for someone else. Per Scholas, a non-profit group that refurbishes old computers for low-income families, is having a Community Used-Electronics Recycling event on Saturday in Park Slope. The group, which is opening up a Brooklyn outpost in addition to its Bronx location, charges a small recycling fee—mostly from $5 to $7 (though a full-size Xerox copier will set you back $25)—to take the stuff off your hands and $10 to erase the hard drive. What they can’t fix gets recycled.

Saturday, 9 to 6, Per Scholas, 88 9th St., 718-772-0655.

After a commenter raved about the random-Brooklynite-recommended cheap-date spots we featured last month, we decided to go out and dig up some more.

So we went to Prospect and McCarren parks over the weekend and grilled more strangers on their  favorites places for wallet-friendly romance, and once again, were totally impressed by the ideas. If you’re venturing out this weekend, considering trying one of these eight reader-suggested venues—and let us know how it went. (more…)

If you think the Carousel, zoo and acres of romp-worthy fields make Prospect Park a child-friendly place, well… you’re right, and there’s about to be more for the summer. Starting today, and on every Friday through August, the park will host Heart of Brooklyn’s Family Fridays, a weekly day of animals, education and snacks at the park’s Children’s Corner (entrance at Ocean Ave., Flatbush Ave. & Empire Blvd.). Six cheap-date spots worth a try

by | 6.19.09 | 4 Comments

As the financial equivalent of swine flu ails the economy, the awkward line, “So, uh, you want to go to dinner sometime?” should be a carefully calculated inquiry. It can be a little less calculated if you pick one of these half-dozen bars and restaurants, which we came up with through the highly scientific method of asking people who were out and about in Brooklyn last weekend.

Should you join a CSA this summer?

How are you getting your greens this summer? If the answer is the frozen food aisle of C-Town, consider signing up with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group instead.

The produce-buying collectives, which offer a weekly delivery of farm-fresh produce at prices less than you’d pay at a grocery store or green market, are a booming business. There are 20 new CSAs in the city this year, seven of them in Brooklyn alone. Groups in Fort Greene, Bay Ridge, and East Williamsburg have been booked solid for months (next year, sign up in February), but we found seven CSAs around Brooklyn  that are still taking new members.
